Did you know that periodontal disease is the most common health issue in dogs and cats? In fact, a staggering 80% of dogs and 70% of cats experience some form of it! Maintaining your pet’s dental health is essential for their overall well-being.

The infection can spread to many different parts of the body. Advanced stages of periodontal disease leads to systemic effects such as kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, oral cancer, etc.

Veterinarians recommend brushing your pet’s teeth daily or at least weekly, along with annual check-ups and professional cleanings to maintain their oral health.

Tips for maintaining good oral hygiene for dogs and cats

Daily or Weekly Brushing

  • Start slow and make brushing a rewarding experience through praise and offering treats.

    Use pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste).

Dental Treats and Chews

  • Toys and treats designed for dental health can help freshen breath and reduce plaque and tartar buildup.

  • For cats, cat grass is a great natural way to help keep their teeth clean. It contains chlorophyll, which has antiseptic properties that can support oral health.

Dental Wipes

  • For pets who really dislike brushing, dental wipes are an easier alternative. Not as effective as brushing but will definitely help!

Water Additives

  • Add pet-safe dental rinse liquid to their drinking water to help reduce bacteria.

  • Some cats and dogs are a little unsure about this product at first so it is helpful to add tiny amounts gradually, slowly working up to the recommended dose.

Healthy Diet

  • Here at Animal Ark American Fork we only sell high-quality dog and cat food.

  • Keeping your pet on a healthy diet will help prevent dental issues.

  • For dogs, feeding them pet-safe raw bones (not cooked, that may splinter when chewed). Raw, uncooked bones are a natural way to prevent and reduce plaque and tartar buildup.
